The Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (FBDS) was established in 1992 as a non-profit organisation. Guided by independent thinking and technical-scientific criteria, it was founded with the purpose to stimulate thought on sustainable development in its various spheres and to disseminate best practices in environment and sustainability in Brazil.
Idealised and conceived by Israel Klabin, Erling Lorentzen, and Eliezer Batista, the Foundation began its activities aiming to add multidisciplinary knowledge to its philosophy. To achieve this, it followed three distinct paths: organised the first seminars in Brazil to promote the concept of sustainable development, integrated respected specialists and technical-scientific authorities into its strategic framework, and established extremely important partnerships with academic institutions.
Since the beginning of its activities over 30 years ago, FBDS has always positioned itself as a link between the productive sector, science, and public policies, focusing on projects with broad reach related to global climate change, protection and recovery of Brazilian biomes, and the pursuit of greater social equity.
