Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees of FBDS is responsible for formulating the strategy and guiding the basic operational guidelines of the organisation.

It is tasked with approving the strategic plan, the action plan, the internal regulations, the organisational structure, and other directives, as detailed in the FBDS Statute.

The current Board of Trustees, with a three-year mandate starting from 10 June 2022, comprises members Gabriel Klabin (president), Fabio Scarano, Roberto Schaeffer, and Russel Mittermeyer.

Fabio Scarano

Fabio Scarano

Member of the Linnean Society of London (since 1995). He was a Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany (2002), and the University of Minnesota, USA (2003). He served as Coordinator of the Ecology and Environment Area at CAPES/MEC and as Director of Scientific Research at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. He was a lead author for the first report of the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change (PBMC; 2011-2014), for the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC; 2011-2014), and a coordinator for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES; 2015-2018). He was the General Coordinator of the Brazilian Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (BPBES; 2015-2019), Senior Vice President of Conservation International, and Scientific Director of FBDS. He has authored numerous scientific publications on biodiversity, climate change, and sustainability. He has received two Jabuti Literature Awards in the Natural Sciences category for the books “Brazilian Biomes: Portraits of a Plural Country” and “Atlantic Forest: A History of the Future.” His most recent book is “Gaia’s Regenerators” (2019).

Gabriel Klabin

Gabriel Klabin

With extensive experience in robotics and aircraft, he founded Santos Lab in 2007, a company providing innovative aerial solutions for Agriculture, Defence and Security, and Civil Construction. As the coordinator of aircraft projects such as Carcará I, Carcará II, and Orbis, he collaborated with the Brazilian Navy and Army, as well as European companies, to develop a foreign version of Carcará II. He has recently partnered with Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd. on a project that will introduce large-scale precision agriculture in Brazil.

Roberto Schaeffer

Roberto Schaeffer

Member of the Science Advisory Committee (SAC) of IIASA from 2014-2020, and a member of the Science Advisory Council (SAC) of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Sweden, since 2014. He has been a member of the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) of the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) since 2015. He is a member of the Expert Panel for the project “Energy Transition Commission and Fossil Fuels” of SEI, and a member of the Advisory Board for the Routledge Series in Energy Transitions, both since 2016. An expert on the “EU High-Level Panel on Decarbonisation” since February 2018, he has over 250 scientific publications, including journals such as Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy, and Science. Elected a “Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters,” and awarded the “IAMC Award for extraordinary contribution to the field of IAM,” both in 2020. Since 2021, he has been a member of the “Vulnerability, Impacts, Adaptation and Climate Services (VIACS) Advisory Board for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6).”

Russel Mittermeier

Russel Mittermeier

Russel Alan Mittermeier is an anthropologist and primatologist. He is the President of Global Wildlife Conservation and Chair of the Primate Specialist Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In his research and environmental advocacy work, he has traveled to 169 countries on seven continents and conducted work in 30 of them, particularly in the Amazon (Brazil and Suriname), the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, and Madagascar. He has authored 35 books, both scientific and popular, and over 650 popular and scientific articles. He was named a “Hero for the Planet” by Time magazine in 1999.
