Itatiaia National Park Management and Public Usage Planning

FBDS developed the participatory management and public usage plan for the Itatiaia National Park in collaboration with IBAMA. This included conducting an environmental diagnosis of the park area, implementing a geographic information system, and structuring a geo-referenced database on physical conditions, biota, and anthropogenic factors.

COP 3 on Climate Change, held in Kyoto

The third Conference of the Parties (COP 3) resulted in the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty that complements the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It was the first international treaty aimed at controlling greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere.

1994

Economic-Ecological Zoning of the Legal Amazon

The Economic-Ecological Zoning of the Legal Amazon was completed at a 1:2,500,000 scale, with a pilot area at 1:250,000, using a geo-referenced database that enabled the development of technical work related to the environment and sustainable development in the Amazon.

With this study, FBDS began a series of other territorial management and spatial analysis projects that remain an essential part of the institution’s work to this day.

1992

FBDS’s involvement in the Earth Summit 1992

Following the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro (Earth Summit 1992), FBDS took three distinct paths: the Foundation organized the first seminars in Brazil to promote the concept of sustainable development, incorporated respected experts and technical-scientific authorities into its leadership framework, and established significant partnerships with academic institutions.

“UN Conference on Environment and Development (Earth Summit 1992)”

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as Eco-92, the Earth Summit, and Rio 92, was a conference of heads of state organized by the UN and held in June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro to address global environmental issues.

1992

Founding of the FBDS

The Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (FBDS) was established in 1992 as a non-profit organization, guided by autonomy of thought and technical-scientific criteria. It was founded with the aim of fostering thinking about sustainable development across its various dimensions and disseminating best practices in environmental management and sustainability throughout Brazil.
